Posttraumatic Stress Disorder along with Traumatic Brain Injury has exploded into the national conscience in the last two decades, largely due to the impacts of ongoing military engagement in the Middle East and the very public sacrifices our warriors are called upon to make on behalf of our nation. But, there are also many other cases of PTSD, Acute Stress, and Complex PTSD that are not military-related. For most people, PTSD arises from systemic sexual or physical abuse in childhood, covert incest, witnessing or experiencing life threatening events, and being subjested to the effects of torture or terrorism.
From our inception, Stillwaters Counseling and Psychotherapy has specialized in the treatment of Trauma and complicated grief syndromes. Though no one trauma can be compared or ranked as better tor worse than another, our primary focus has been to serve special forces warriors and others whose exposure to trauma and TBI inducing events far exceeds the norm in frequency and intensity than for most members of our military and the public. This preparation has made it possible to serve these warriors more effectively. It has also made it possible for this practice to provide highly effective services to civilians, as well.
Our therapist has first hand knowledge of the impact of battle, near death experiences, witnessing horrific injuries or death, providing care for loved ones who are experiencing protracted suffering, car accidents, sexual assaults, traumatic loss, coming under fire, suicide, homicide, or other sudden death events, and other trauma inducing experiences. These expereinces have prepared her to work more in sync with others who have encountered difficult scenarios in their own lives. She can hear your stories. She doesn’t flinch. She can relate to what you have seen, heard, smelled, felt, and tasted. This experience hs been invaluable in the treatment of complex trauma.
Traumatic events can be so impactful that they leave “imprint” on our psyches and our spirits. The symptoms of traumatic stress can overwhelm everything we once believed was true about life and ourselves. It can freeze us in place. It can make us run.
It can make us die.
This level of pain leads many to escape into drugs, alcohol, porn, sex, or gambling. And, sadly, some escape permanently when the ghosts of the past continue to scream, and nothing can stop them.
But, they CAN be silenced.
Trauma can impact every aspect of life, and can lead to feelings of despair, depression, hopelessness, worthlessness, and shame. In cases where there has been long standing and repeated exposure to trauma inducing effects, or there has been a single, large, overwhelming trauma; our psyches and spiritscan become so deeply wounded that we develope what is now called “Complex PTSD.” These individuals experience profound suffering and are often misunderstood by those around them.
